Group trip planning

July 2027 · 10–12 days in Japan Jillian & Tanner, Tim & Emma, Michael & Ryan
Everyone is welcome to do any and all activities, but feel free to split off and do your own thing.
Trip at a glance
Who, when & the vibe
Who
6 of us: Jillian & Tanner, Tim & Emma, Michael & Ryan. Everyone flies from Newark (EWR).
When
July 2027. 10–12 days in Japan, then 2–3 days in Honolulu for Jillian & Tanner.
Where
Tokyo → Hakone → Kyoto, with an Osaka day trip. Seoul is an optional add-on at the start.
The vibe
Join anything, or split off and do your own thing. And this group loves food: street food and markets in every city.
Japan 2027 · 02
Suggested time split
10 nights, three stops
4
Tokyo
The biggest list of activities and shopping. Day one doubles as jet-lag recovery.
2
Hakone
One full day for the Hakone loop, golf or spa, plus a night at a ryokan.
4
Kyoto
Three days of Kyoto plus one day trip to Osaka.
Want 11–12 days? Add a night in Tokyo or Kyoto. Honolulu (Jillian & Tanner) comes after Japan.

Why it works
Everyone flies home from Tokyo, on nonstop flights with many daily options.
Tokyo shopping comes last, so nobody hauls purchases across Japan.
Could line up with the Sumida River fireworks (expected July 31).
Trade-off: a long arrival day straight to Kyoto.

As planned
What it adds
2–3 more days, one extra international flight and a half-day transfer.
The trip grows to about 13–15 days before Honolulu.
Middle ground: anyone keen on Seoul goes a few days early and meets the group in Tokyo.

Hakone
Vibe: A mountain hot-spring town ~1.5 hr from Tokyo. Slow, green and relaxing: the reset between two big cities.
Things to do
  • Hakone loop: mountain train, ropeway over Owakudani's volcanic vents, pirate ship across Lake Ashi
  • Mt. Fuji views (summer is often hazy, so a clear view is a bonus)
  • Spa and onsen at the ryokan

  • Hakone Open-Air Museum
What's a ryokan?
A traditional inn: tatami rooms, futons, robes, and usually dinner and breakfast included.
What's an onsen?
A natural hot-spring bath. Shared baths often bar tattoos; a private-bath room avoids that.

Good to know
Japan in July
Weather
Hot and humid, often 90°F+. Rainy season usually ends mid-to-late July. Pack light and plan sights for early morning.
Festivals
Gion Matsuri parades Jul 17 & 24 (Kyoto). Tenjin Matsuri Jul 24–25 (Osaka). Sumida fireworks, expected Jul 31 (Tokyo).
Money
Cards work widely, but carry some cash for small shops, shrines and food stalls.
Trains
The JR Pass likely isn't worth it for this route; buy Shinkansen tickets individually. Suica or ICOCA on your phone for everything else.
Luggage
Ship big bags hotel to hotel (takkyubin), about $15–25 each. Shinkansen needs a reservation for oversized bags.
Arrival
Fill out Visit Japan Web before landing for faster customs.

Decisions & next steps
What we need from you
  1. Exact dates in July (around a Gion Matsuri parade, or avoiding the crowds?)
  2. Which route option: 1, 2, or 3 with Seoul
  3. Budget tier per couple or person
  4. Room setup: will Michael & Ryan share?
  5. Seoul: who's interested, and would you go ahead on your own?
